An Unmistakable Chat with Glenn Beck

“Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason, than that of blind-folded fear.”

Thomas Jefferson

More often than not, the first thing people want to talk to me about when they first meet is how I quit my job. It’s not the why – the movement and the activism – that interests them. Instead it’s the how – how do you walk away from stability and into the unknown to start something new? I suspect people are so enamored with the how because they too want to do the same, leave their secure jobs and make an impact in the world doing something where their passions lie.

In the beginning of my self-employment, I had a lot of time on my hands, which meant time with my thoughts. I would obsess about money and the possibility of homelessness. To settle my frantic mind from the terrifying uneasiness and the unknown, I would sit in a chair on my porch, close my eyes and visualize myself seated on airplanes flying all over the country to talk with important people. Those people didn’t have faces or a names; I just knew they were significant and together we would do critical work. That day came 9 months after I founded ConversationED when I found myself looking out of the little oval window on an American Airlines flight, headed to Dallas, to speak with Glenn Beck.

While sitting with Glenn I was astonished to learn we were more similar than we were different. One of the most glaring similarities is that we both left our stable jobs to start something new that we believed would be important work – Glenn left FOX and I left the school district. That connection turned into a friendship and a respect for one another.
