Hump day Hero 01/08/14 – Superintendent Dr. Carmen Colman Kathleen Jasper January 8, 2014 This week’s Hump Day Hero is Dr. Carmen Coleman, the superintendent of Danville Independent School District in Kentucky. Dr. Coleman has implemented Project-based Learning in her schools where students use their skills learned in the classroom to solve problems or create something in their community. For example, students in her district work with local businesses to apply trigonometry to build trusses for new construction projects in the area. And it gets better! According to the Valerie Honeycutt from Kentucky.com, a local online newspaper, Dr. Coleman is preparing to ask the state to eliminate two standardized tests she feels are “useless”. Dr. Colman’s goal is to eliminate Kentucky Performance Rating Tests and End of Course Exams. That’s quite a battle! If she’s successful, other districts could follow. For blazing the trail and doing what is right for students and teachers, Superintendent Carmen Coleman, you are ConversationED’s Hump Day Hero. Hooray!
