This week’s Hump Day Hero is a political one, a Tennessee Governor who decided to put lottery funds where they belong, back into education.  According to The Tennesean, Governor Bill Haslam declared on Monday in his State of the State Address, he will set aside$300 million from the Tennessee Education Lottery to fund an endowment.  This money will cover all tuition and fees for two-year institutions for all graduating high school seniors.  The good news, this is a very practical approach to education funding by putting money and resources toward community college and technical schools.  This will help prospective community college students, who don’t want to head towards debt while trying to acquire a 4 year college degree, to pursue technical skills easy applied in the workforce.  The bad news, this attempt is political; trying to achieve adequate funding for education typically attracts opposition and disagreement.  Hopefully the funds make it through the bureaucratic process and go where the Governor designates.  But for attempting to put a large sum of lottery money toward practical education, Gov. Bill Haslam, you are ConversationED’s Hump Day Hero.
